Bills lose... Again

In a Sunday afternoon game in Canada, the Buffalo Bills provided another heartbreaking loss for the few remaining Buffalo Bills fans. All kidding aside, losing is becoming a routine in Buffalo football. After years of less than quality quarterbacks, Ryan Fitzpatrick is the best the Bills have had in 10 years. He has shown grit, heart, determination and leadership and have the Bills playing like a team much better than the 0-7 record that had entering the game versus the Chicago Bears. On top of that the Bills had a 0-2 record in Toronto. The Bills and Bears kept it close for most of the game. Fitzpatrick didn’t have great numbers but he made the big plays when they counted and so did WR Steven Johnson. The problem is that the Bills are not consistent.

The Bills played like they deserved to win but at other times, Bears QB Jay Cutler was dissecting the Bills defence with relative ease. The Bills have played in a number of close contests this season, including a heartbreaking loss to the Ravens a few weeks back. The Bills have just enough talent to win a few games in this league, but after a few costly turnovers, missed calls by the referees, unnecessary penalties and plain bad luck, the Bills are still winless. Having never experienced a win is a psychological hurdle for the 2010 Bills. Rookie CJ Spiller has never experienced a win in the league. There have been games where the Bills were in it until the last few moments and this week versus the Bears was no different. A TD reception from WR Roscoe Parrish tied the game at 7 in the first half. In the second half “old man” Bears RB Chester Taylor and Bills RB Fred Jackson traded touchdowns but Rian Lindell’s extra point attempt was blocked, Bears led 14-13.

In another game that the Bills could easily have won, they took a fourth quarter lead when Bills seldom used RB Corey McIntyre rushed one in giving the Bills a 19-14 lead, as Fitzpatrick couldn’t connect on the 2 point conversion attempt. Could this be the day that the Bills finally chalk one up in the win column? The Bears had possession and marched down the field, topped off by a Cutler to Earl Bennett touchdown giving the Bears a 20-19 lead. The Bears took advantage of the Bills lacking defensive prowess, converting a two point conversion and extending the lead to 3 points. Bills fans have become accustomed to their team giving up fourth quarter leads during clutch time and unless the Bills could pull off a miracle this was going to be the eighth straight loss for Buffalo.

The Bills fell to a miserable 0-8, next up for Buffalo are the improved Detroit Lions. They enter the contest with a 2-6 record. The two good things that the Bills have going for them is that Detroit’s young star at quarterback, Matt Stafford is injured and not active for the game and that the game is at Ralph Wilson Stadium. This is their chance to experience a victory.
