Buffalo Bills... Not Even Close

On paper the Bills might as well have folded before the opening kick-off. Even with the hometown fans at Ralph Wilson Stadium, the Buffalo Bills struggled through another Sunday loss. The New York Jets are considered one of the most lethal teams in the NFL. They are a balanced team with a young quarterback and a strong defence. During the first half of week 4’s matchup between the Jets and Bills, the Bills had just 9 minutes of possession. The Jets scored 14 points behind Mark Sanchez and he completed 11 of his first 18 pass attempts for 131 yards. He is a QB who has been heralded as the next Drew Brees without the huge stats. The Bills did little if anything through the first 29 minutes of the game. Their four possessions amounted to less than four plays each and a punt. The Bills put 7 on the board when David Martin caught a Ryan Fitzpatrick pass late in the half making the score 14-7.

The Bills were dominated in every aspect of the game and here they stood within striking distance at halftime. Quarterback issues continue to haunt the Bills, after waiving Trent Edwards, Fitzpatrick looked like Edwards on this day. The offence struggled to put up numbers, after putting up 30 points against New England last week, Buffalo fans were wondering where the offence was this week. The second half was annihilation by the Jets. Dustin Keller had two receiving touchdowns in a span of less than two minutes and RB LaDanian Tomlison ran for his second TD of the game, giving the Jets a 38-7 lead. This game was as lopsided as could be, even more than the score might indicate. The Jets nearly rushed for 300 yards this afternoon, that’s almost more than the Bills have rushed for this season.

The Bills defence was not present and their offence was not better. Ryan Fitzpatrick made a few impressive runs throughout the game, especially in the fourth quarter. He had 74 rushing yards while the Bills team had 40. Fitzpatrick looked like Michael Vick at times, but it wasn’t nearly enough. Wide Receiver David Nelson, a rookie from Florida showed some promise for the Bills in this game. When back up QB veteran Mark Brunell gets a few snaps, the Jets are almost always going to be holding a huge lead and today was no different. The Jets came into Buffalo and did what they were supposed to do, that being whip the Bills. The Bills fall to 0-4, and the Jets improve to 3-1. The Bills play another home game next week versus the Jacksonville Jaguars. It should be interesting next week as Trent Edwards returns to Buffalo two weeks after being released. Who knows that might have the Buffalo Bills show up and finally put a mark under the “W” category. The final score 38-14.
