Bills Finally Win One

Buffalo Bills hats & merchandise

The Buffalo Bills finally experienced a win and a home win at that. After losing continuously for what seems like many years, was actually only 8 straight losses to open the 2010 season. The Bills joined the Carolina Panthers as the only one win teams in the league. This Sunday, the Bills competed in another closely played game against the Detroit Lions. The Detroit Lions have been the “Buffalo Bills” of the NFL for many years and even with Barry Sanders, barely accomplished anything as a franchise. The Lions were 2-6 coming into this game with starting QB Matt Stafford not healthy to play.

In a season where the Bills should have won at least two or three close games, today’s game was a game they should have lost. The Detroit Lions outhustled and outplayed the Bills in every statistical category including time of possession, total yards and had an equal number of turnovers (1). The Bills opened the scoring with a 5 yard run by Fred Jackson who had a big game rushing for 133 yards. The Lions converted on a 25 yard field goal before the end of the first quarter. Fitzpatrick connected with Fred Jackson for a 16 yard TD reception, his second TD of the game. The Bills were holding a tight 14-6 lead, I say tight because Shaun Hill looked dangerous at QB for the Lions and Pro Bowl Wide Receiver Calvin Johnson played like a young Randy Moss, destroying the Buffalo defence. If Matt Stafford was starting this afternoon it would have been a definite Detroit win but Hill is a back-up QB for a reason and it showed as he only completed 29 of 50 pass attempts. Hill had thrown for one interception and no touchdowns until late in the fourth quarter when Hill and Calvin Johnson went for a 20 yard TD.

In a season where luck has more often than not, been against the Buffalo Bills, today was different. When the Lions lined up for a 2 point conversion attempt, trying to tie the game at 14, the Lions did not convert. Even Calvin Johnson, who lit up the Bills for 128 yards receiving, couldn’t help but watch as the Buffalo Bills finally won a game this season! Fitzpatrick was nothing spectacular going 12-24 for 146 yards passing but no turnovers. No receiver on the Bills had a huge game but Steven Johnson, Lee Evans and Fred Jackson combined to put up Calvin Johnson type numbers. A win over the Lions doesn’t mean much considering the Bills battled against the Ravens and Patriots this season but in the NFL a win is a win. The Bills will be trying to extend their winning streak next week against former Buffalo Bill Terrell Owens and the Cincinnati Bengals. After watching an episode from Owens reality show, the Bills might be pissed off enough to deliver an upset.
