Indianapolis rides into Denver and tames the BroncosIndianapolis @ Denver
No doubt going into Denver on Sunday both teams were on a roller coaster of emotions, the Broncos are still in mourning after the loss of wide receiver Kenny McKinley early this week after an apparent suicide. No one can plan, or prepare for such a terrible tragedy but as we all know life and football goes on. For Denver they had the high powered Indianapolis Colts coming into town fresh off a win in the Manning Bowl against the New York Giants, and Denver off a win against the Seattle Seahawks. The Colts were looking to continue the momentum from last Sunday night where the running game was a huge part of the offensive game plan. If you play the Colts you know that Peyton Manning is going to get his but if the Colts have success running the ball then it will be a long night for any opposing team. The Broncos entered this game without Knowshon Moreno who was inactive for Sunday’s game and for the Colts Pierre Garcon did not make the trip with the team so both were without a couple of the key parts to the offense. Let’s get to the game: It was a slow go in the first quarter for both teams the Colts drove the ball deep into Broncos territory a couple of times but only came away with field goals. Vinatieri on the opening drive for the Colts hit a 38-yard field goal and at the end of the first he tacked on another from 33-yards out to make the score at the end of the first Colts 6, Broncos 0. In the second the Colts led off the scoring as Peyton Manning hit Austin Collie for a 5-yard touchdown pass, the Broncos finally got on the board as Matt Prater connected on a 25-yard field goal at the end of the second making the score at halftime Colts 13, Broncos 3.
The second half was filled with scoring and excitement, the Broncos came out in the third ready to play as Kyle Orton hit Brandon Lloyd on a 48-yard touchdown pass but the Colts countered with Peyton Manning hit Blair White for a 9-yard touchdown connection and at the end of the third Matt Prater added a 34-yard field goal for the Broncos, making the score at the end of the third, Colts 20 Broncos 13. In the final quarter it there was only one scoring drive, Manning hits Collie for a 23-yard touchdown strike and that was the end of the game, the final score Colts 27, Broncos 13.
Key Stats: Denver Broncos Kyle Orton 37 for 57 476 yards 1 touchdown 1 interception Laurence Maroney 12 rushes 24 yards 0 touchdowns Brandon Lloyd 6 receptions 169 yards 1 touchdown Jabar Gaffney 12 receptions 140 yards 0 touchdowns
Indianapolis Colts Peyton Manning 27 for 43 325 yards 3 touchdowns 0 interceptions Joseph Addai 13 rushes 29 yards 0 touchdowns Austin Collie 12 receptions 171 yards 2 touchdowns Reggie Wayne 4 receptions 65 yards 0 touchdowns
It was definitely a pass happy game, where both teams threw the ball around with the Colts coming out on top but for both teams to be effective during the rest of the season they must re-establish the running attack, but nonetheless a great win for Indianapolis.
