It is true we don’t put much stock into the preseason games and that the starters only play for a limited time but it is an important time. It is time for players coming off of injuries to display their talents once again and it is time for the rookies to show what they are made of (personally they are my favorite thing to watch in the preseason). Also the best part of the preseason is that football is back and now it is time to get focused and watch your team make a Super Bowl run, as far as meaningful records for the preseason that is out the window but the time is definitely valuable to many on the teams.

In the first preseason game the Colts battled the San Francisco 49ers in a game played at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday. Here is how the game went down, in the first quarter the Colts were definitely on a roll as Peyton Manning and the offense were steamrolling down the field and Adam Vinatieri put the first points on the board with a 21-yard field goal to make it 3-0, the Colts had another big drive that ended with a Joseph Addai 7-yard touchdown run and at the end of the 1 st quarter it was Colts 10 and the 49ers 0. Manning only played two series and that was pretty much it for the Indy offense because after he left, the game had a big momentum shift in the way of San Francisco. In the remaining quarters the Niners dominated and it started with a Reggie Smith 91-yard interception return for a touchdown then Michael Robinson had a 3-yard touchdown run making it San Francisco 14 and Indianapolis 10, Shane Andrus tacked on two field goals before half time making the score 20-10 San Francisco. In the 3 rd David Carr came in at quarterback for the 49ers and had an 8-yard touchdown pass to Tony Curtis that was all the scoring in the 3 rd, making the score at the end of the third 27-10. In the 4 th quarter both teams put points on the board first the Niners Anthony Dixon had a 5-yard touchdown run, next for the Colts Jacob Tamme had a 3-yard touchdown reception making the score 34-17 in favor of San Francisco, the 49ers added a late field goal to make the final score San Francisco 37, Indianapolis 17.

Just a few notes from this game:

Manning and the starting offense looked good: In the first two series of the game, the offense looked in mid season form which is great for Colts fans looking for their team to repeat as AFC champions. Manning was 8 for 10 passing for 91 yards, Addai had 5 rushes for 11 yards and 1 touchdown, Collie had 2 receptions for 28 yards and Wayne had 2 receptions for 16 yards. This is definitely great to see especially early on in the preseason.

If its not the starters there could be trouble: If Peyton Manning goes down it could spell trouble for the Colts, Curtis Painter is the back up to Manning and he struggled throwing 3 interceptions now I know, I know it is just preseason but you have to have better play from your backups or you find someone else to be the backup.

For the Niners: They possibly found someone to replace Glen Coffee: Anthony Dixon was a bright spot for San Fran on Sunday, rushing for 100 yards on 21 carries. The Niners are looking for a backup to Gore since Coffee announced he would be leaving the team to retire, Dixon could just be the fix all for them.
