Dolphins get back to basics in win over Oakland

The Miami Dolphins went from a shutout loss at home to a blowout win in Oakland in a week’s time.  With Chad Henne’s return, the Dolphins offense got back to normal.  The win really represented how important Henne’s presence is to Miami’s offense.  A lot is said about how Miami has failed to find a suitable quarterback since the retirement of Dan Marino, on Sunday, Henne became the first Dolphins quarterback to throw for 300 yards and 2 touchdowns on the road since Marino did it in 1999.

The Dolphins special team’s woes continued on Sunday, as they failed to stop Oakland’s Jacoby Ford, he opened the game up instantly with a 101 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.  The Fins responded on the following drive with the usual Dan Carpenter field goal.  A few drives later Henne connected with reserve running back Patrick Cobbs on a 29 yard touchdown.  3 and outs continued for the remainder of the quarter and Oakland came back with a TD with 5 minutes left in the second quarter.  Oakland quarterback hit Jacoby Ford for a nice 44 yard pass as former Clemson receiver forced the catch away from former Clemson safety Chris Clemons.  With less than 10 seconds left, Miami snagged another field goal before the half.

With a 1 point lead after halftime, Oakland would find it difficult to score again as they only managed 3 more points in the remainder of the game.  Miami found offensive rhythm and managed to post 20 points after half giving them the 33-17 win.  Henne hit rookie receiver Marlon Moore on a nice 57 yard catch and run, and Dolphins running back Ricky Williams sealed the deal with a 45 yard run at the end of the 4 th quarter, relinquishing any hopes of an Oakland comeback.

Miami is now 5-1 on the road and has scored on a NFL high 8 opening drives.  They will need to build from this win as they face the Cleveland Browns and the rushing attack of Peyton Hillis next week.
