Giants Defense - Early Setback? On the defensive line front, the main focus was to be on the battle for a starting defensive end position between Mathias Kiwanuka and Osi Umenyiora,. Umenyiora, a former pro bowl player and elite pass-rusher, missed all of 2008 with an injury. He returned last year but underperformed, especially against the run. He had some disagreements with Bill Sheridan, the former defensive coordinator and complained publicly about being removed from the starting line-up and not playing every down. So, now with the start of training camp here, all eyes were to be on the Umenyiora situation.
Umenyiora recently traveled to Colorado to see a hip specialist. Apparently, he still suffers from lingering issues from a torn hip flexor that he suffered in 2006. He has been told he can still play while managing the hip pain as he has done in the past and surgery can wait without the risk of suffering further damage. Nevertheless, this has to be of major concern to the Giants and their fans, as its likely issues with the hip will linger through camp into the season. Stay tuned for updates.
Next up: A look at the linebackers.
