On Wings of Eagles… Randall Cunningham’s Tragedy
I am a young man just in my 30’s and I have three young boys that I love tremendously, for all of them I hope that they become a better man than I but in order for them to get there I must be there for them. I remember when I was growing up my father left at an early age and my mother raised me being both mom and dad for me and my brother and we grew up loving football. As we grew up I remember an amazing quarterback that could do it all out of UNLV and he played for the Philadelphia Eagles, his name Randall Cunningham. Cunningham was the quarterback that was ahead of his time, he could do it all, pass, run, and even fly (or so it seemed). On Sunday’s it was amazing to watch Cunningham run that Eagles offense, he was an incredible talent on the field. During his career he amassed four Pro Bowl selections, four All Pro selections, he was the 1992 Comeback player of the year and his stats included 207 touchdowns and over 29,000 yards with an 81.5 quarterback rating.
More than statistics and more than just plays on the field Randall Cunningham was a strong leader that made his team better just by his attitude and passion for the game. Cunningham was a strong influence in the community as he played and even more so after his playing days. In his days after football Cunningham became and ordained minister and is now the pastor at a church in Las Vegas. On Wednesday tragedy struck the Cunningham family as Randall’s two year old son Christian drowned in a hot tub in the back yard of the family’s home. Right now there are few details to the story but police think it was just a tragic accident and Randall Cunningham was not at the home when the child was found.

As a father I cannot imagine the pain that the family is going through right now, but I can just pray that Randall and his family can find peace in the God that he serves. I wanted to write about this story because even though these are larger than life athletes they still have the same pains and struggles that we have on a regular basis. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Cunningham’s during this tough time. Randall Cunningham was an amazing talent on the football field; he made a lot of defenses miss and made many big plays for the Eagles. At this time in his life he will need his faith to help him be strong not only as a man but as a father and husband, and he will need to rise up on wings of Eagles.
