Bye Week Comes At Good Time For Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings have a bye week this Sunday and it seems that it couldn’t have come at a better time. The Vikings (1-2) now have an extra week to straighten out all of the problems they’ve been having on offense. Brett Favre is using the time off wisely, telling reporters after the game that he plans on spending the extra time off at the Vikings practice facility watching film. This gives Favre a chance to see on film what he has been doing wrong, or better yet, what teams are now doing correctly against him. Going into the bye week on a winning note is always a good thing as well, even though watching Favre at the press conference after they beat the Detroit Lions, (0-3) it almost sounded as if he was describing a loss. “We are not playing nearly as good as we were last year, and when I say we, I mean me.” Even head coach Brad Childress didn’t sound like he was in a celebrating mood neither, after his team beat the Lions 24 - 10. “I’m not sure who we are.”

Next up for Minnesota after the bye week will be at the New York Jets (2-1) on Monday Night Football. The Jets game will be Favre’s last as a 40 year old. Brett Favre has been captivating to watch on Monday Night Football to say the least and has had some of his biggest games as a pro on the Monday Night stage. He also has played in the most watched Monday Night game ever, when last year as a Viking, 21.8 million viewers tuned in and watched, as he played his old team the Packers in Green Bay and beat them. The New York Jets played in the first ever network broadcast of Monday Night Football in 1970, and lost to the Cleveland Browns. I think we are all truly fortunate to be presently watching one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game, right before our very eyes, and getting to see him put his personal hand print all over the NFL record books.

I personally don’t know how many more times I’m going to get to watch Brett Favre play, especially on a prime time stage like Monday Night Football, so I’ll be watching, just like millions of others will. This will be Brett Favre’s second to last Monday Night Football game of the 2010 season. The Vikings also play the Chicago Bears at home in the Metro Dome, in week 15.

Minnesota’s schedule doesn’t get any easier after the Monday Night game with the Jets. After that game, they then get the Dallas Cowboys at home, and then go on the road to Green Bay and New England. Having an early bye week does mean that the Vikings don’t get another week off until the playoffs roll around, and that’s also taking into consideration that they win enough games to make it there, and also win enough games to get a bye in the playoffs and a game at home. With that being said though, the Vikings have enough injuries, and especially at wide receiver, that this bye is coming at a good time. Speaking of wide receivers, Favre had a message for his. “I’ll be here watching film and practicing, and all of my wide receivers are welcomed to join me.” If I were a wide receiver on that team, I think I’d take Favre up on his offer in a heartbeat.
