Will the Vikings fall to 0-3 to start the season? They better hope not

Well the 2010 NFL season has started out just like everyone thought it would. The Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Bears and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 2-0, while both the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings are 0-2. Everyone saw this coming a mile away, didn’t they?

Coach Brad Childress had some calming words about his Minnesota Vikings after they fell to 0-2. “I don’t think any of these guys are panicked, but I do feel like the urgency will definitely pick up.” Adrian Peterson did manage to rush for 145 yards and one touchdown, but he couldn’t get the one yard he needed the most, when towards the end of the game, the Miami Dolphins defense stopped Peterson on fourth and goal from the 1, to preserve a 14-10 victory over the Vikings. The Pro Bowl/Hall Of Fame offensive combination of Brett Favre and Adrian Peterson have combined for a whopping total of 19 points in two games thus far.

Next up for the Minnesota Vikings (0-2), are the Detroit Lions, who are also sporting a record of 0-2. Everyone expected the Detroit Lions to be 0-2 at this point, nobody expected the Minnesota Vikings to be here. This is a very different Detroit Lions team from a year ago that the Vikings will be facing though. The Lions have been a very competitive team this season so far, and have been in both games they’ve played late against the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles.

Brett Favre sounded like he wanted to put the loss to the Dolphins squarely on his shoulders as he stood at the podium and answered questions after the game. “We had plenty of opportunities. Our defense did all they could do, but we just didn’t make the plays. I’m just disappointed.”

It’s hard to look for reasons to be happy when your team starts out 0-2, but if there is an upside that Minnesota fans can look at and hang their hats on, it would have to be the Vikings defense. The Minnesota Vikings defense has kept them in both games, and has given the offense a chance to pull out wins in both week one and two.

The key match up to watch for in this game will be the Minnesota Vikings defense against the Detroit Lions rookie running back Jahvid Best. Best is having an electrifying rookie season to say the least, with 5 touchdowns in 2 games so far. As good as the Vikings defense is, I still think that they will have their hands full trying to contain him. Second year phenom quarterback Mathew Stafford will be out for this game, but Shaun Hill has stepped in and done admirably.

Is Brett Favre still shaking off rust from a long off-season and no training camp? I think so. Can he still be the Brett Favre of last season? I think so. Will the Minnesota Vikings beat the Detroit Lions? I think they will. Here is just a little stat here that I’d like to share with Vikings fans. A handful of teams have started the season 0-2, and then still went on to win the Super Bowl. Has any team in NFL history ever had an 0-3 start, and then went on to win the Super Bowl? No.
