Divine Intervention or Just Good Defense?

Unless you’ve been cut off from any media coverage whatsoever, you are aware that the Broncos have won 7 of the last 8 games with Tim Tebow as the starter. One cannot turn on the television, computer or radio without somebody discussing the young quarterback. He is not only the main topic of sports coverage but has crossed over into the national news as well. The Denver Broncos are currently alone in first place in the AFC West with a relatively easy schedule for the last three games of the season. This weekend they face the New England Patriots who have arguably one of the worst defenses in the AFC right now. Both of the Broncos opponents in the final two games are mediocre on both sides of the ball. Is it possible that the same team that started out with just one victory in the first five games can actually make the playoffs? The throngs of crazed Tebow fans sure think so. This country, no-the world has become Tebow obsessed. The kid can handle pressure. He’s been getting it done since high school. All the guy does is win. National Championships, the Heisman and now NFL football games in the clutch.

People are so caught up in the theatrics of the Broncos wins that they are overlooking the football aspect of it. He still doesn’t have the throwing mechanics of an NFL quarterback. The first three quarters of play in each game have been just plain horrendous for Tebow. Every game seems to come down the final two minutes and whether he can work that magic, yet again. What most fans don’t realize is that the much improved Broncos defense is the main reason they are still in the game in the fourth quarter. The lackluster performance by the quarterback throughout the majority of the game will eventually catch up with him and the team. You’d think that a team cannot continue to win based on one good drive per game. Or can they? I’ve heard the words savior, apostle, and even Jesus used to describe Tebow and his incredible run for the playoffs. It will certainly be exciting and great for the league to see how the season ends for the quarterback and the Broncos.

This weekend the defense will have their hands full with Tom Brady and his seemingly endless parade of receivers. His tight end, Rob Gronkowski broke the record last weekend for the most TD passes by a tight end in a season with 15. The record was previously held by Tony Gonzalez with 13 touchdowns. Champ Bailey and company will have to keep Brady’s receivers in check in order to give the Broncos offense a chance. Tebow will have to rely on his arm and legs a bit more with his main running back Willis McGahee’s knee not at one hundred percent.

No matter what the outcome of this weekend’s matchup or even the rest of the season, the drive and determination of Tim Tebow has ignited a huge spark not only locally but on a global scale as well. His character, charisma and ability to win are great for the NFL and the fans of the game. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out and if he can continue to finish with the Broncos on the winning side of the scoreboard. I know for sure that I will be watching.
