Can Kerry Collins help the Colts win, now?Now we all know Kerry Collins as he has been in many places in the NFL and toured with many teams. He may be best known from his college days at Penn State where he was a highly touted college player ready to come into the NFL. He came into the NFL as one of the top quarterback prospects he had all the abilities and the tools to be a top quarterback in the league in 1995. He was drafted by the Carolina Panthers, where he stayed for a 3 year stint before moving on to the New Orleans Saints (1 year), New York Giants (5 years), Oakland Raiders (2 years) and Tennessee Titans (5 years). The fact is Kerry Collins is a proven competitor in the NFL, he has the ability to step in and make an instant impact for any team (and as you can see he has played for most). The question is in such a limited time can he really help the Colts win right now, because we all know that this is Manning’s team and signing Collins is simply insurance for if Manning cannot make the first start of the season. Let’s look at his career he has over 40,000 yards, 200 touchdowns with an over 50% completion rating so he is very capable of starting for any team in the league and now with the Colts.
The hope is that in bringing on Collins it will help with the learning curve of Curtis Painter and the other young quarterbacks for the Colts. Fact is Painter just has not been what Indianapolis has hoped for; he has been inconsistent and really struggled in operating the offense. I think if it is for only a couple of weeks Collins can come in and make the Colts a team that can win, even without Manning. The key will be if at any time during the season Manning goes down Collins will be able to learn the offense under one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game. My question is with the signing of Collins, why not sign Jim Sorgi? He already knows the offense and he backed up Peyton Manning for many years before testing the free agent market. In my opinion Sorgi, for this instance would have been a smarter signing just for the time of the acquisition. For now it is Collins, I have a lot of respect for what he has done around the league and he is a tough, gritty competitor that will no doubt fight to insure that Indianapolis will remain on top of the AFC South (at least until the field general is back). Can Kerry Collins help the Colts win now, yes he can with his leadership, experience and the talent he has on the field the Colts are in a good position to make another run.
