Kansas City Chiefs at Detroit Lions Recap
In NFL action week two the Kansas City Chiefs traveled to the Motor City & got absolutely obliterated by the up & coming Detroit Lions 48-3. Detroit outgained Kansas City 411-267 & had more first downs 23-12. The loss dropped the Chiefs to 0-2 on the season, while the Lions surged to 2-0. After making a field goal on their first possession of the game the Chiefs missed one on their second. Then, in a case of what could go wrong did go wrong, KC lost All-Pro running back Jamaal Charles for the season when he tore his ACL landing awkwardly attempting to gain a first down while going out of bounds. Talk about taking the wind out of the sails, offensively the Chiefs were dismal once Charles left the game. The next ten times they got the ball they turned it over five & punted it away the other five. Wow. Maybe the Lions defense is really that good. Or maybe the Chiefs offense isn’t. On the other side of the ball Detroit cranked it up against the Chiefs defense and scored five touchdowns & two field goals in eight possessions after a slow first quarter. Quarterback Matt Stafford had plenty of time to pick apart the Chiefs secondary as he passed for 294 yards & four touchdowns. The Chiefs front seven failed to register a single sack.
At this point it seems rather remarkable how far KC has fallen after winning the AFC West last season with a 10-6 record. Two games in KC has scored 10 points & allowed 89. They are clearly the worst team in the NFL so far with the Seattle Seahawks their closest pursuers. Or perhaps we will see the Buffalo Bills & Detroit Lions square off in Super Bowl XLII. Looking ahead this wobbly NFL team gets to fly to San Diego to play the Chargers next Sunday. Odds makers favor the Chargers by as many as 16 points. The safe bet appears to be giving those points. It is hard to imagine KC righting this ship anytime soon & not getting blown out again.
