ST. LOUIS – On August 26, the Chiefs and Rams had their third preseason game of the year. The Rams are coming off an undeserved win at home last week against the Tennessee Titans and the Chiefs are coming off a repeat performance of last years’ Wild Card matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, which both resulted in dominating wins by the Ravens.

Pre-game notes: Jonathan Baldwin, WR for the Chiefs, was held out of his second straight game because of his thumb injury. Kansas City is winless this preseason, whereas the Rams are undefeated. The annual Governor’s Cup continues today with the Rams leading the preseason series six games to five over the Chiefs.

1st quarter:

On 2nd-and-2 at the KC 6, Sam Bradford, starting QB for the Rams, threw a short middle pass to Mike Sims-Walker, WR, which resulted in a touchdown and extra point by K Josh Brown. Chiefs 0 Rams 7

On 4th-and-17 at the KC 13, Dustin Colquitt, P for the Chiefs, punted the ball 53 yards and it was returned for 6 yards to the STL 40.

On 2nd-and-8 at the KC 11, Bradford threw a short right pass to Lance Kendricks, TE, which resulted in a touchdown and extra point by K Josh Brown. Chiefs 0 Rams 14

On 2nd-and-11 at the STL 7, Bradford threw a short left pass intended for WR Greg Salas, but was intercepted by Derrick Johnson, LB, who returned it for no gain to the STL 7.

On 4th-and-goal at the 8, Ryan Succop, K for the Chiefs, successfully kicked a 26-yard field goal. Chiefs 3 Rams 14

On 4th-and-15 at the STL 27, Donnie Jones, P for the Rams, punted the ball 56 yards and it was returned for 9 yards to the KC 26.

On 4th-and-9 at the STL 43, Colquitt punted the ball 34 yards and it was fair caught at the STL 9.

4th quarter:

On 4th-and-16 at the STL 44, Colquitt punted the ball 32 yards and it was fair caught at the STL 12.

On 4th-and-11 at the STL 11, Jones punted the ball 47 yards and it was fair caught at the KC 42.

On 4th-and-3 at the STL 3, Succop unsuccessfully kicked a 21-yard field goal because it was blocked by Robert Quinn, DE, and recovered for no gain by C.J. Ah You, DE, at the STL 30.

On 1st-and-10 at the KC 45, Thaddeus Lewis, backup QB for the Rams, knelt for -1 yard to the KC 44. End game

Post-game notes: The Chiefs’ and Rams’ streaks continue. Two sets of lights went out at Arrowhead but the game went on because it was still light enough to play. The generators came on before it got too dark and Fox 2 viewers missed about fifteen minutes of the game. Mike Sims-Walker caught his first touchdown pass for the Rams.

In a win that was considered lucky, the Rams triumphed over their inter-state rivals 14-10. The big stat of the game was the Rams’ two for two in the red zone and the Chiefs’ zero for two on goal to go. The Rams ended up throwing two interceptions by losing the turnover battle by two, yet still won. The Chiefs were two for two on fourth down. The Rams dominated on the ground (170 to 58), though the Chiefs dominated in the air (251 to 151). Colquitt ended up punting the ball inside the 10 four times. The downfall of the Chiefs came when they decided to go for a field goal near the end of the game and ended up having it blocked; then the Chiefs false started twice consecutively when the Rams were about to punt, resulting in a Rams first down. One player for the Chiefs was guilty of two consecutive penalties on the kickoff, which ended the third quarter.

The season is looking better for the Rams, due to the fact that the first team offense and defense played well, and I would still be very surprised if the Rams do not win this year’s division and make the playoffs for the first time since 2004.
