AFL Week 2 Recap

Let's see what we have learned from the second week of AFL action. Here are the top ten things to notice:

  • Cleveland may be a legitimate contender in its division, although they have yet to face Philadelphia or Dallas. Winning its first two games and the first home game in front of a sold-out crowd, the Gladiators are clicking on all cylinders on offense, scoring 61 and 66 points respectively.

  • Dallas showed a lot of heart and determination in defeating Columbus without Clint Dolezel. It was the superb play of the defense that propelled Dallas to a narrow win over the team that knocked them out of the playoffs in 2007.

  • Utah has made no improvements on defense. In their first two games, they have allowed an average of 64.5 points a game, which is a full touchdown worse than what the shaky unit surrendered in an up and down season last year.

  • Tony Graziani and Sonny Cumbie lead the AFL with 14 touchdown passes and both have lead their teams to 2-0 records.

  • Orlando, Columbus, Georgia, Utah and Kansas City are winless so far after making the playoffs last season.

  • Orlando and San Jose are the bottom two teams in total defense and points allowed, after ranking in the top three in 2007.

  • Philadelphia is the only team to not have thrown an interception, Graziani leads the league in touchdowns, quarterback rating and scoring efficiency.

  • Georgia has the worst offensive scoring differential, averaging 18 points less than in 2007. Orlando has the worst defensive scoring differential, allowing 18 more points. Both teams are 0-2 this season.

  • Los Angeles is only allowing a 48% pass completion rate to opponents and already has 5 interceptions. They have allowed 21 points combined in the second half, 9 against the VooDoo and 12 against the Rattlers.

  • Arizona was completely dismantled in its home opener aginst the Avengers. They are 1-1 on the season and need to make the playoffs or all season ticket holders get full refunds.
