Jets vs. 'Skins: Preseason Review
Saturday night might have just the only Jets pre-season game in history worth attending. Yep, it was the debut of Jenn Sterger as the team’s “game-day host.” Talk Brett Favre all you want, but have you seen Sterger? This is an acquisition all Jet fans can agree upon. But the people came to the Meadowlands on Saturday to see 39 year old quarterback and he did not disappoint.
When Favre dropped back and hit Jerricho Cotchery, it was on. Then he hit Chris Baker on his second drop back and my head almost exploded. After Favre connected on his third pass and I was ready to retire his jersey and put it next to that Weeb Ewbank jacket on the sideline.
The acquisition of Favre legitimized the Jets offense, the ball is flying around on offense. Just ask my roommates who practically had to tie me down after Favre threw a touchdown to my boy Dusty Keller because I was going nuts.
Overall, the Jets first unit offense looked very good. Favre and Cotchery seem to have their timing down. Chris Baker made a couple of plays without whining to the media about his contract and role in the offense. Most of all, Favre has the Jet fans energized and that’s really all you can ask for. Glen Foley is not walking through that door, which is a good thing. Favre finished the game 5 for 6 for 48 yards and the Keller TD, but I’ll try to contain myself because this is just the preseason and Larry Coles didn’t even play.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Jets looked stout. Rookie Dwight Lowery impressed in the secondary for the second straight week. The first unit defense did a pretty good job in all aspects of the game and new faces Kris Jenkins and Calvin Pace looked solid in limited action.

The key to this team still remains how quickly the team will be able to come together. Yes, Favre’s progress learning the offense is very important, but that is only part of the equation. How will the defense mold together? Will the Jets be able to run the ball and stop the run? Will Jenn Sterger give me her phone number?
These things won’t matter until an actual preseason game is played. The Jets lost Saturday’s game to the Redskins 13-10, but the only thing troubling about that is Mike Nugent missing a 23 yard field goal attempt with a chance to tie the game (23 yards? Seriously?).
Jet Notes
- At times in camp first round pick Vernon Gholston has looked last, but as Greg Buttle said on Saturday, he seemed to “find some direction” in the second pre-season game
- I really enjoyed Joe Namath calling Ian Eagle “Greg” multiple times
- Kellen Clemens is still awful
- Greg Buttle was surprisingly good as a TV color man, although he is atrocious on 1050 ESPN and SNY…good job Greg
- Brett Ratliff was solid once again, going 13 for 19, for 148 yards, so maybe the Jets do have a QB battle once again, but luckily it would be for the backup position
