Jets Almost Blow Game to Hapless 'finsNew York gets win over Miami in Favre's debut
This weekend provided me with the most excitement I felt from an event in a long time. Yep, Samurai Girl premiered Friday night on ABC Family starring Jamie Chung who you may know as Jamie from the Real World: San Diego. Woof! This weekend also marked the debut of the Mississippi Gunslinger, Broadway Brett, Brett the Jet, Jet Favre, and I would think of more nicknames, but this guy isn’t exactly Shaq with the nicknames. It doesn’t get much better than Wilt Chamberneezy. Yes, Brett Favre finally wore a respectable shade of green on Sunday and as the scene from There’s Something About Mary goes, “What the hell is Brett Favre doing here?” “I’m in town to play the Dolphins ya dumbass?” And on Sunday, he was.
Brett Favre came out firing though, and I got all excited. If you don’t believe me, ask the people at Jillian’s who asked me to shut the (expletive deleted) up after I FLIPPED out when Brett (yep, we’re on a first name basis now) hit Larry Coles on his first throw. Don’t even get me started on the 56-yard bomb to Jerricho Cotchery, but the team didn’t look crisp and that is the problem. Most people would be happy with an opening week win against their biggest rival, but I am a Jet fan. We always expect the worst and are not pleased until we get exactly what we want. Maybe the Jets sold their soul to get Joe Namath. I don’t know. This game stunk and if any Jet fan is satisfied with what they saw Sunday, then they need to invest in some Lasik surgery, which I could go for as well.
Look, I understand that Brett Favre doesn’t have a lot of experience playing with this offense and these players, so I am content enough with what happened on Sunday. I mean but why couldn’t we just have hit that loser Chad Pennington in his mouth once and for all. Instead we almost let him dink and dunk his way into a victory. Is this what we have to expect from Jets football 2008? Let’s hope not. Favre gave you what was expected, some of the good (2 tds) and some of the bad (2 fumbles including 1 lost), but the fact I’m disappointed by an opening week victory should be a good sign. Right? The fact that I am not satisfied by beating the Dulphs is a sign that I expect more from this club. This team is good enough to beat the Dolphins down, so when it doesn’t go down like that, I don’t like it. There were a lot of positives from Week 1. Even though the Jets got zero push from the defensive line in the first half and for long stretches in the second half, something the Dolphins correspondent would comment on if he actually watched the game, the Jets secondary played great. Darrelle Revis already is a star in this league. Dwight Lowery is the next Kerry Rhodes in terms of a late round pick that will have a massive impact on the secondary. And Kerry Rhodes is Kerry Rhodes. Enough said. The defense came through when they needed to. Bryan Thomas almost equaled his sack total from last year against the Dolphins on Sunday and Calvin Pace tacked up one sack in an attempt to earn his enormous contract. But once again, the story Sunday was Favre. The guy adds excitement to the team. I feel ten times better with Favre running the show than I would with Kellen Clemens. Let’s face it Clemens is less qualified to be an NFL starter than Sarah Palin is to be Vice-President. That pass to Chansi Stuckey was a smart play. As the Mangenius told Peter King, "That's something that only a smart player would know -- throw it down to the end zone, and the opposition catches it, who cares? The worst thing would be to take the sack and give them the ball in good field position. Brett knew just to throw it and take the chance.”
He’s right. Favre can make it happen for this team. With Tom Brady hurt, the AFC East is now wide open. The AFC (average frustrated chump) is now wide open. Let’s make it happen Brett. The Jets showed a lot of promise on Sunday, but they have to play that way for a solid 60 minutes and can’t go in and out. This team may no be the team to beat in this division, but those are just words. This Sunday against New England, they must make it happen on the field.
