Jets vs. Giants preseason review
Jets top Giants 10-7 in preseason action
What else can be said? Jets V. Giants is always the biggest matchup of the preseason. One team won the Super Bowl last year; the other won the Super Bowl 40 years ago. When the Jets meet the Giants it is on. Both teams are playing for their slice of the city and by city, of course, I mean East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Let’s be honest for a second. The most important thing to ever happen in this preseason series is a season ending injury to Jason Sehorn a few years back (and of course Osi going down in this game). Mike DeVito is not going to be starting a regular season game any time soon (hopefully) so how meaningful could this game possibly be? Neither team’s top receiver saw the field for a play. This game didn’t mean anything. Although I may be wasting my time writing this, I’ll try to make some good comments so that you don’t waste your time reading it.
Here’s what you liked on Saturday night if you’re a Jet fan…
Brett Favre played great for the 2nd consecutive meaningless week. He connected with Jerricho Cotchery for a 49 yard touchdown strike that was overturned due to an illegal shift by Chris Baker, who continues to annoy me. Favre also hit Brad Smith for a long gain that was ALSO overturned. So maybe if the Jets learn not to illegal shift, they will score a touchdown with the first unit next week in the preseason finale. If not, who really care anyway, am I right?
The Jets first team defense looked pretty good. Calvin Pace made a significant contribution with 2 sacks that won’t count towards his career total. David Harris tacked up a meaningless sack as well and continues to be a beast. Do yourselves a favor Jet fans, go out to Modell’s or wherever they sell licensed apparel and get a David Harris jersey. The kid is an absolute monster. Every snap Kris Jenkins plays this year makes this defense considerably better. Let’s just pray he stays healthy.
It may have looked last week like Brad Smith’s demotion from the 3rd receiver spot was imminent due to the solid play of 2 nd year man David Clowney, but Smith looked great against the Giants. Clowney’s injury dampened the week in Jets Nation, but when he’s able to return the Jets should be 4 deep at receiver if Smith plays like he did Saturday night.

Here’s what you didn’t like on Saturday night (the same rules from above still apply)
That commercial with Eric Mangini talking for 30 seconds. I would have preferred Tony Soprano telling Carmela, “It’s the Jets coach, I have to say hello.”
I still love Mangini, what can I say. I can’t stay mad at you Eric.
I know it’s not a real game and I have made my feelings about the preseason clear, but the Jets can’t run the football. As the season progresses and the offensive line begins to gel, we’ll see how the Jets do.
The Jets first team offense didn’t score a touchdown, either. They have a 39 year old quarterback, what do you expect? I’ll hold my breath until the season starts.
Jets Notes
- I take back what I said about Greg Buttle last week.
- The biggest thing to happen in this game was the injury to Osi Umenyiora, nothing else important really happened
- The Clowney injury hurts; he was playing great
- This game was really boring; I almost fell asleep
