The best and worst Super Bowl performances of all-time by a quarterback

How many times have we seen this scenario, it’s the big game and the quarterback shows up and shows out, he has an incredible game and takes his team to victory or it’s the big game and the quarterback is a no show, and he and his team completely falls apart on the greatest stage in football. We see it every year it seems, one field general leads his team to victory while the other has heart ache. In this article I would like to highlight just a few of the best and worst Super Bowl performances in the history of the game, granted there are many that we could go on and on about but we want to shed light on just a few of the special and not so special ones. First let’s go with the best of the best performances in the big game:

Tom Brady, New England Patriots, Super Bowl XXXVIII

Tom Brady has a total of 354 yards and that was the fourth highest of all time performances. He had a completion percentage of 66.7 one of the highest in the big game; he had 19 passing first downs and 32 completions both Super Bowl records.

Phil Simms, New York Giants, Super Bowl XXI

It looked like the Giants were headed for a loss going in at the half down 10-9, but that is why they play two halves. Phil Simms led his team to 24 straight points and without throwing a single incomplete pass the entire second half.

Steve Young, San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl XXIX

Steve Young threw 6 touchdown passes, which is a Super Bowl record and in this game he was even the leading rusher with 49 yards. This Super Bowl was a rout with the 49ers taking complete control in the second half of the game.

Jake Delhomme, Carolina Panthers, Super Bowl XXXVIII

Surprisingly, Jake Delhomme had a shoot out with Tom Brady this by far was the greatest performance in a losing effort. The amazing thing is that in the first half of the game the Patriots outgained Carolina by a huge margin. Delhomme and the Panthers came out in the second half on fire and could have won the game but the defense could not hold the Pats off.

Joe Montana, San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl XXIV

Montana in this game threw for 5 touchdowns, add the three rushing touchdowns by San Fran and that means 55 total points the most in Super Bowl history. He had a 75.9 completion percentage that is the second highest by any quarterback with at least 10 attempted passes.

The worst of the worst:

Rich Gannon, Oakland Raiders, Super Bowl XXXVII

Gannon threw a record five interceptions with three of those being returned for Tampa Bay touchdowns. Tampa built a 34-3 lead against the Raiders, with a running game that was a no show, the Raiders relied heavily on the arm of Gannon and they paid for it all game long.

Kerry Collins, New York Giants, Super Bowl XXXV

This could possibly be the worst game by any quarterback in the Super Bowl. Averaging less than 3 yards per attempt and only 6 first downs with 39 total passes, add on four interceptions along with his four sacks and no touchdowns makes for a very long day. Keep in mind Collins was facing that incredible Baltimore Ravens defense, but really you have to be ready on the big game.

Tony Eason, New England Patriots, Super Bowl XX

Eason could be the only one worse than the Collins performance that is if he would have stayed in the game beyond the first half. His game went like so, 5 straight incomplete passes, a sack for a 10 yard loss, and a sack for a seven yard loss with a fumble loss and another sack for an 11 yard loss. The Patriots mercifully pulled him for backup Steve Grogan with only five minutes left in the first half.

So there you have it some of the best performances, and some of the worse performances in the Super Bowl history. There are many more that could have been posted but these were some of the best and worst of all time, we hope that you were able to enjoy and even think back on some of these games and relive some of these moments.
