Indianapolis Colts All-Time Top 10

The Colts Top Ten Players

Over the many years Baltimore and now the Indianapolis Colts have had a number of great players, from years past to even today. What we wanted to do was to look at the top 10 (in our mind) Indianapolis Colt players of all-time and in this article we will do just that:

10. Gary Brackett

Not much is said about this linebacker, but he is the captain of this defense probably the most underrated linebacker in the NFL he does the small things and does them better than most. Brackett is relentless when it comes to stopping the run and can cover the pass with the best of them. Gary Brackett is a smart linebacker that knows how to play the game.

9. Jeff Saturday

The picture of stability, fact is when Saturday is in the game the offense runs like clockwork. Many will say that Peyton is the key and for the wide receivers and backs he is, but Saturday keeps the uniform of 18 clean and makes the difference on the offensive line.

8. Duane Bickett

A massive linebacker at 6’5” he won defensive rookie of the year in 1985, he like Brackett was good against the run and could play the pass as well but he loved to rush the quarterback. Bickett was a smart player who had a passion for the game of football.

7. Bob Sanders

The hardest hitting safety that Indianapolis has ever had, Bob Sanders changes the face of the defense when he is on the field. Riddled with injuries, when Sanders is playing there is no doubt that the Colts defense is motivated for every play. An excellent defender, who is a huge run stopper he just makes big plays; definitely the heart and soul of the defense.

6. Clarence Verdin

The creator of “the Verdance” he was elected to two pro bowls as a kick returner he was electrifying to watch on the field. Undersized he was the start of the hybrid wide receiver for the Colts, he did everything; punt returner, kick returner, receiver, and rushing he was a big part of the Indianapolis offense.

5. Dwight Freeney

Possibly the best defensive end in the game today, most definitely ever for the Indianapolis Colts, Freeney is not big but he is fast and elusive. He can cause big problems in any offensive backfield and more often than not he does, with his deadly combination of speed and technique if you are an offensive lineman you better bring your A game.

4. Edgerin James

Edge was a fierce runner out of the University of Miami; he ran with power and had good speed. Over the years in Indy he developed into a good receiving running back who could gain the tough yards when you needed them. Edge helped change the Indianapolis Colt game plan and made them a dual threat.

3. Marvin Harrison

Known as “The Connection” Peyton and Marvin were like hand in glove as they played together for many seasons. For many years 18 to 88 ruled Indianapolis, Marvin Harrison had the uncanny ability to catch the uncatchable and do the unbelievable game in and game out. Harrison could possibly go down as the best wide out in Colts history.

2. Peyton Manning

If Johnny Unitas was the face then, Mr. Manning is the face now. He is the most cerebral quarterback in the game today and has 4 MVP trophies to show it. Manning takes the position of quarterback to the next level and if you are a young QB in today’s game he is the one to watch.

1. Johnny Unitas

I am a huge Peyton Manning fan, and think that he is the greatest quarterback today but when you mention the Colts you must talk about Johnny U. When Manning is finished with his career he will be at the top of this list but as for right now Johnny Unitas is the greatest Colt to play the game.

There are many more that could have made the list, we could go on and on but here are our top 10 Colts players of all-time. Who knows as time goes on the list could change and that is the beauty of the game.
