Green Bay Packers vs San Francisco 49ers Recap

Packers hats & merchandiseThe San Francisco 49ers visited Lambeau Field for week 11. This showdown was not predicted to be one for the ages, however, it turned out to be a decent game. The Packers entered the game with high hopes to stay in the playoff race, while the 49ers were just trying to keep a positive attitude on their mediocre season.

Alex Smith came into the game as a five game starter this season, being moved into the starting role after the eight year veteran Shawn Hill was benched. Smith has shown the city of San Francisco that he could possibly be the QB of the future for the once famed team of the eighties and nineties. Smith led his underdog team into Lambeau on Sunday attempting to bring his team back to .500.

Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers had another intention in mind. He was playing against one of the favored teams to draft him coming out of college. So maybe there was a little “I need to rub it in their face” action going on to motivate Rodgers to perform at his highest level.

In the first quarter the 49ers’ Frank Gore broke a long run for 42 yards, proving to the Packers that the running game will be a strong threat for San Francisco. In spite of Gore’s efforts in the first quarter the Packers filled the holes in their defensive line and held the Hurricane alumni to a total of 59 yards rushing.

The Packers exploded on offense in the second quarter while their defense pressured the 49ers, holding them to just three points going into the half.

Scoring 23 points in the first half, Green Bay thought they had the game under wraps, pending the play of San Francisco. The 49ers didn’t disappoint keeping the game interesting, scoring 21 points in the second half and holding the Pack to just one touchdown. Overall, the 49ers put forth one strong half but that was not adequate enough to bring down the commanding Green Bay Packers offense.

The Packers moved their record to 6-4, still trailing the 9-1 Vikings in the NFC North. With Detroit Lions hosting the Pack this week, we should see a 7-3 Green Bay team moving into week 13.
