As the Favre Turns

Minnesota Vikings fans are now officially in year two of the Brett Favre saga. Last year it started in the summer when Favre told the Packers that he wanted to comeback, and the Packers had already moved on with the Rodgers era. Everybody thought that Favre wanted to go to the Vikings as the best shot to win a Super Bowl and play against the Packers. So the end result of that is the Packers trade Favre to the New York Jets and a stipulation of that trade is if the Jets turned around and traded Favre to Minnesota the Packers would get three first round picks. The end result on the season, both the Packers and Jets miss the playoffs, but the Vikings won the division. And the end of the season Favre yet again announced his retirement, so we thought.

Favre was released by the Jets when the Jets drafted former USC quarterback Mark Sanchez. This started the rumbling and grumblings again, with Favre going to the Vikings again. Now we are going through another summer waiting on pins and needles to see what’s going to happen next. This off season the Vikings acquired Sage Rosenfels from the Texans to challenge Tarvaris Jackson for the starting QB job. The Vikings have admitted interest in Favre, and Childress went as far as visiting him to in Mississippi. The most recent report on the Favre saga was that he was going to see Dr. James Andrews, a renowned surgeon, to see what his options are for his torn bicep tendon.

The torn bicep tendon has the Vikings concerned. They had MRI’s sent to Minnesota for examination. The Vikings would want to have a healthy Favre at the start of training camp to get acclimated to the players and offense around him. Experts have said for the past two years that the only position that the Vikings don’t have secured is the quarterback position, and with out a doubt Favre will make that position stable for a year or so. Even with Brad Childress and company admitting they have interest in Favre, the team has still stuck with its plan during mini camp and OTA’s this offseason, establishing the #1 guy at quarterback between Rosenfels, and Jackson.

Players have been supportive of Jackson amid his troubles the past two years. Pat Williams recently said this about Jackson, “ I talk to Tarvaris all the time (and) tell him you have to put in the time," Williams said. "This ain't college no more. This is the NFL. You have to put in more time than you are used to putting in. If you are putting in four hours, you have to put in eight. You have to put in more time than what he's doing. I think if he puts the right time in, he will be a great quarterback in the league ." You don’t get that kind of support from your teammate unless they think you have some real talent. So it seems that even if the Vikings are unable to land Favre that the team is ready to go with whoever will be at QB whether or not it’s Rosenfels or Jackson. This summer is Favre from over.
