Trades, Trades, and More Trades Close Out the Final Rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft
If you had to summarize the final rounds of the 2010 NFL draft you could do it in four words: it was a trade. I believe that the wonderful game of football has never seen as much shuffling of players as it did Friday and Saturday. Teams like the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Redskins, Tennessee Titans, and New York Jets participated in multiple-way trades dealing with many draft picks and even more players. Seattle Seahawks new head coach Pete Carroll will be reunited with former USC player, running back LenDale White, this season, who was traded from the Titans to Seattle for three late draft picks. Seattle also acquired Leon Washington from the New York Jets after the Jets drafted USC running back Joe McKnight. "Just a great one-two punch to add to our team,'' Carroll said of the new additions. “We're real excited about Leon Washington. Our guys loved him.'' New York also released nine-time Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca Saturday. The Washington Redskins realized they no longer need QB Jason Campbell after acquiring Donovan McNabb from the Philadelphia Eagles. Campbell was traded to the Oakland Raiders for a fourth round draft pick in 2012. This now presents Oakland with Campbell and JaMarcus Russell, who was drafted first overall by the Raiders in the 2007 draft.
Onto actual draft picks, Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen finally found a home late in the second round. With the 48 th overall pick, the Carolina Panthers stole Clausen from the draft race. Carolina’s QB situation before the draft included Matt Moore, who replaced Jake Delhomme late last season. Moore has more of a chance to be the starting QB to begin the season, but if he isn’t living up to expectations, Clausen will be there waiting. Clausen’s transition into Carolina’s offense will be seamless. The Panthers run the same type of offense Charlie Weis, Clausen’s former college coach did at Notre Dame. "I think it's going to help me tremendously, being in coach Weis' system," Clausen said of the offence run by head coach John Fox in Carolina. "Coach Fox told me he said it was the same exact system I've played in the last three years. I'm really excited about that."
