2010 NFL Preview > Chicago Bears Preview2010 Chicago Bears Football Preview
Head Coach: Lovie Smith 2009 Record: 7-9 (3rd place in NFC North) Pro Bowlers: Lance Briggs (LB), Johnny Knox (KR) AP All-Pros: Lance Briggs (2nd team)
2009 Review:As Jay Cutler began his time with the Chicago Bears everyone thought that the Bears would improve on their 9-7 record in 2008, everyone was wrong. Cutler struggled as the Bears team as a whole found the season to be rough, trying to convert Devin Hester; probably the most electric punt returner/kick returner in the league, to a wide receiver just did turn out the way they wanted. Cutler lacked weapons and the running game was quite ineffective Matt Forte, who in 2008 emerged as the go to back, struggled greatly. I think the key was to bring on Cutler to free up Forte and the running game, but when you don’t have the threat at receiver it makes it difficult and the defenses can stack the box and wait on the run. On the bright side Johnny Knox came out of his shell and made his first pro bowl and tight end Greg Olsen became a favorite target of Jay Cutler. On defense when you lose a key component like Brian Urlacher it can be hard to recover and the Bears never did. Lance Briggs was a bright spot on defense making the pro bowl but the Bears defense had too many holes with their captain sidelined with injuries. If the Bears are going to improve next season they must get the offense some weapons, Cutler is good but as good as he is he can be equally bad, he must have help to take the pressure off.
2010 Preview:The Bears made huge waves early on in the free agency market, mainly because they understood that there was no way they could continue with the team from last season. So to help with the offensive production they brought in Chester Taylor from the Vikings and Brandon Manumaleuna from the Chargers to provide a spark on offense. Unfortunately there still was nothing done about the wide receiver issue, maybe they are relying on Devin Hester to become that receiver they are hoping for (good luck). On defense they bring in the biggest free agent on the defensive side of the ball in Julius Peppers to give them that solid pass rusher to go along with the stout linebackers Briggs and Urlacher. I think the Bears will be better than last season but not much better. They must address the issue at receiver and even though they revamped the coaching staff, coaches don’t play, players do and that is what they need on the field.
2010 Prediction:Chicago Bears: 8-8 (3rd place in NFC North)
