2009 Review:Coming off of the ’08 season where the Steelers compiled a 12-4 record and won their sixth Super Bowl it was not a season they would like to remember. The Steelers finished 3rd in their division and did not make the playoffs very disappointing especially after the season they had. During the first half of the 2009 season it looked as though the Steelers were well on their way back to the championship compiling a 6-2 record during the season’s first half but they had a five game losing streak and three of those included losses to division opponents. In this season there were a few bright spots, running back Rashard Mendenhall really made an impact and turned many heads with his hard nosed running and the emergence of wide receiver Mike Wallace as the potential deep threat. The aging Steel curtain defense definitely had there struggles at times giving up the big plays and the offense found itself stagnate and stale. The key for the Steelers to return to prominence is for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to return to his championship form. Hines Ward must have a big season and they have to find someone to play opposite of him to take the pressure off, if Mendenhall continues his play they should be good in the running game. The defense must improve for the Steelers to return to the Super Bowl, they have to get younger and faster because chances are they will not out score other teams.
2010 Preview:First and foremost the discussion is definitely about who will fill in for Ben Roethlisberger as starting quarterback while he serves his 6 game suspension (chances are he will only serve 4 games) the team acquired Byron Leftwich and they have Dennis Dixon but it is anyone’s guess as to who will take the reigns. The key will be to stay afloat, we all know this is Big Ben’s team (at least for this season) so if Pittsburgh can maintain until he returns they may have a shot at the playoffs. They made a couple of big moves in this off season sending Santonio Holmes to the Jets and choosing not to re-sign Willie Parker but the did add Antwaan Randle-El to give a threat at receiver to help Hines Ward. In my opinion the Steelers are in trouble, from Big Ben to Mike Tomlin if the Steelers do not make the playoffs this season head’s may roll because when you are used to winning, losing doesn’t work especially in a place like Pittsburgh. I believe that the suspension will be just too much to overcome and I don’t think the Steelers will be the team of dominance that they have been in the past, but time will tell.
2010 Prediction:Pittsburgh Steelers: 7-9 (4th place in AFC North)
