2009 Review:In 2009 the Chargers improve on their ’08 record of 8-8 by going 13-3 and winning their division for the fourth straight season and the fifth time in six seasons. With the weapons they have on offense everyone thought they would be the representative for the AFC in the Super Bowl but the one thing that hampers them it seems every year is the one thing that kept them from advancing their defense. The offense is loaded with weapons from Phillip Rivers to Antonio Gates; Ladainian Tomlinson to Darren Sproles to the emergence of Vincent Jackson the Chargers seemed to be on their way in the playoffs. Fact is the Chargers were the team that no one was talking about heading into the playoffs and it seemed as though they had a golden opportunity to make waves in the playoffs. In ’09 Phillip Rivers was coming into his own as a prolific NFL quarterback and Vincent Jackson seemed to catch everything thrown his way as he came on to be a pro bowl caliber receiver. The concerns are on defense as the Chargers are getting older and they must get younger going into 2010 and on offense L.T. is getting older and they have an explosive back in Darren Sproles ready to take over as the starting tailback. For San Diego to reach that championship form the focus must be on defense.
2010 Preview:For the Chargers another playoff run will not be sufficient only a championship will do in San Diego. The Chargers on offense have all the pieces they need for a title run, sending L.T. to the Jets now frees up Darren Sproles to be the starter (at least for the time) and drafting running back Ryan Matthews will pay huge dividends for them to have the two back attack. Vincent Jackson is looking to improve on last season’s success but he will have to overcome an early suspension and Phillip Rivers is looking to build off of last season and do more at the quarterback position. The focus is still defensively, do the Chargers have what it takes to get over the hump, I don’t think so, they are a playoff team but that is as far as it goes for me. They are good enough to win the division but not good enough to win the championship.
2010 Prediction:San Diego Chargers: 11-5 (1st place in AFC West) playoffs
